Getting There
GETTING TO GIGANTE
A 4x4 is a must in the rainy season and strongly recommended any other time. While the roads in Nicaragua are improving, they are far from the Autobahn. Most vehicles here are rugged and built to take a beating. We'll post up our recommendations for vehicle rental in Managua soon. Once you're here if you're surfing, you'll find yourself traveling by boat most of the time. Surfcamps like our friends at Giant's Foot are willing to pick you up from the airport as part of the package. There are also many other things to see in Nicaragua, and having a vehicle is a luxury you might want on your trip. Here are directions to Gigante:
Head south from Managua on the Pan American Highway toward the town of Rivas, which is about one hour and forty five minutes from Managua. Just on the north edge of Rivas you will see a sign for Tola. Turn west on this rather bumpy brick road. At the first stop sign turn right; this is the road to Tola. When you arrive in Tola you will come to a stop sign with the police station to your left and the city park on your right. Turn left go 2 blocks you will see signs for Arenas Tola and other projects. Turn right and continue for approx 12 kilometers on this dirt road. You will then drive through a deep gorge with a cement run-off at the bottom. Approximately 300 yards after the gorge you will see a left turn adorned with several advertising signs for real estate, and a huge boulder on your right with the word “Arenas” cut into it. Turn left and follow the signs and additional “Arenas” boulders to Arenas Tola and Gigante. This road ends at the village of Gigante on the sea. When you arrive at the village turn left and go about 200 yards. You will see a small red brick home/restaurant on your left (or ask anyone in town where the “gringo restaurant” is).
We will post a map soon, but the above directions will get you here.
